Two birds of Kerala, Wayanad Laughingthrush and Legge’s Hawk Eagle, were conspicuous by their absence from my India Life List. I connected with Danish and he gave an instant positive response- “We will try and surely get them!” Enough for me to pack my bags, despite going through a bad bout of flu, and reach Kochi airport on 22 February 2026 where I was duly picked up. At Thattekad, Danish joined us with his characteristic warmth and we proceeded to Thekkady for an overnight stay. Next morning, he was there even before the scheduled time, ready to get me my target birds. Our Nature Walk started at about 7:00 A.M. and we reached the area of the Wayanad by 7:30. Lo and behold, the Legge’s called and he instantly sighted the bird and called me to click it. One target done. We moved further up. Considering my indisposition, he went further up alone to see whether the Wayanad was around anywhere and soon came back with a positive news. The Wayanad flock is right up there! In the next 15 minutes, the second target was also done. When I suggested that I cut short my trip from three days to just one day, as the targets were done and as I was not in the nest state of health, he wholeheartedly accepted the change, without making me feel awkward about my request. Danish is a gifted bird guide who can see the birds with his ears. That’s a huge quality for a bird guide. This is what makes him so special. I have always loved birding with Danish, each time the joy is even more than before. He makes you feel not as a client but as a family member only. I recently went a bird photography trip with Planet Asia Expeditions to Periyar National Park, aiming to photograph the elusive Wayanad Laughingthrush, and it was an unforgettable experience. I’ll admit, I had some apprehension going in. The forest at Periyar is dense, damp, and notoriously leech infested, and our target bird is a real challenge, a shy “sulker” that prefers the thick undergrowth and rarely gives a clear view. Fortunately, my guide Sanu was outstanding. Not only was he an expert at tracking them and predicting their movements through the vegetation, but he also came up with a simple yet brilliant solution to the leech problem, we used tobacco powder generously on our shoes and the surrounding area, which kept the leeches completely at bay. Under Sanu’s guidance and intuition, we positioned ourselves at a likely clearing and waited. Patience paid off! Soon enough, the birds appeared briefly but clearly, just as he had predicted! I managed to capture excellent photographs of this elusive species, and the thrill of that moment made every bit of the effort worthwhile!! Overall, it was a challenging yet deeply rewarding experience. Planet Asia Expedition’s seamless organization and Sanu’s field expertise turned what could have been a tough expedition into a truly memorable and successful one. Covered 99% of all endemic species around the locations and got some great pictures...Danish is very knowledgeable about bird behavior and extremely hard working which made most of the sightings possible. The top three birds from the trip are Banasura Laughingthrush, Wayanad Laughingthrush and Legge's Hawk Eagle. 😊 Michael Fry27 August 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Dhanish led my son and me on a nature walk in Kerala, starting from near the Inchathotty Hanging Bridge over the Periyar River. Dhanish is an excellent guide – knowledgeable, personable, and skilled. We saw many birds – including black hooded oriole, brain fever bird, Malabar parakeet, orange minivet – as well as Malabar giant squirrels and a toad. Thoroughly enjoyable experience. We learned a lot and had fun doing it. Thanks, Dhanish! Siva Deeban5 August 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Today we had a great birding experience.. A Heartfelt Thank You to Birding Guide Mr. Danish – A Gem in Kerala’s Wilds As a wildlife storyteller who has dedicated years documenting India’s untold wilderness for platforms like Wikipedia, my journey has taken me to remote forests, silent wetlands, and rugged hills. Yet, for five long years, three particular birds continued to elude my lens - the Malabar Trogon, the Sri Lankan Bay Owl, and the Great Eared Nightjar. These majestic and secretive species were more than just subjects to photograph; they were dreams I patiently waited to fulfill. And then, I met Mr. Danish, a young birding guide from Kerala who completely transformed that waiting into one of the most fulfilling birding experiences of my life. This article is not just a review - it’s a sincere note of gratitude from the bottom of my heart. Danish is more than just a guide - he’s a passionate naturalist, a humble human being, and an incredibly professional companion in the wild. From the moment I connected with him, I sensed a quiet confidence and an unshakable dedication to his work. During our one-week birding trip, I was able to photograph not just my long-awaited target species, but many others I had not even anticipated. His deep knowledge of bird calls, nesting behavior, habitat preferences, and even microhabitats is astounding. What truly sets Danish apart is his genuine love for birds and nature, not for money. Unlike many who see guiding as a business, he sees it as a service to nature and to fellow bird lovers. His hospitality was touching - from early morning birding walks to late-night discussions, from airport pickup to drop, he treated me not as a client, but as a family member. He ensured every comfort without compromising on the core objective - spotting birds in their natural habitat. I still remember the excitement in his eyes when we first heard the distant call of the Sri Lankan Bay Owl - a moment he celebrated as much as I did. It showed his involvement, empathy, and passion in every sighting. Not only does he have remarkable field skills, but also excellent communication with local villagers, forest personnel, and fellow guides, which made access to sensitive spots seamless and respectful. His intimate knowledge of Kerala’s birding hotspots is something that can only come from years of experience and dedication. To all birders and nature enthusiasts reading this - don’t think twice. Prepare your dream bird checklist, and Danish will go above and beyond to help you fulfill it. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned photographer, he will adapt to your pace and ensure you go home with not just sightings but stories to tell. I have met many field workers, but rarely have I seen someone as hardworking, honest, and selfless as Mr. Danish. He is a true ambassador of Kerala’s rich avian diversity and deserves every bit of recognition. Thank you, Danish, for everything. You helped me complete a long-standing chapter in my journey - and did it with grace, sincerity, and heart. Arlana Powell23 June 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My husband and I had the pleasure of meeting Danish on a birding tour in India in November 2024. We birded the Western Ghats/Southern India and the Andaman Islands. I have never met a guide that was so passionate about birding. There was excitement with every bird that we saw. Danish made sure that we saw the bird and got to photograph it. He has set such a high standard as a birding guide that I feel will be hard to match by others. We enjoyed our experience so much that we want to return to India to bird with Danish, even if it is such a long way from Canada! Arden Powell23 June 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My wife and I are from Canada, and had the pleasure of birding with Danish in November of 2024. The focus of our tour was the Andaman islands and the western Ghat mountains. We were well taken care of! Danish is one of the most talented and focused birders I have had the honor of working with in my 63 years. We are planning a second trip with him, hopefully in northern India. I do not hesitate in highly recommending Danish and this company for a superb birding experience.
